STEAM update

Recently, the assistant to the superintendent approached me for an update on STEAM.  I will share what I typed up since it sums up what is going on and will be going on.  ENJOY!

TECHNOLOGY:
In our K-4 program, students are working on computer coding using the Code.org website and engineering.  Kindergarten has been learning the basic of computer coding.  First grade has mastered basic sequences and are ready to start adding LOOPS or repeats to their code.  Second grade is also getting ready to start adding LOOPS to their coding.  3rd and 4th graders are working on sequencing and making art with Code. Org.  Plusthe 3rd and 4th graders have been working on EduTyping.  As a student finishes either the home room, top row, or bottom row.  They earn a STAR on the celebration wall.

ENGINEERING/ART/MATH:
The engineering projects are mostly upcycled activities such as building the tallest tower with just recycled scrap paper.  The students did not have glue, tape, or scissors.  One second grade student got a free standing 54-inch tower.  In addition, the students completed a back scratcher project using the engineering design process. The idea comes from Sci Show Kids.  First grade students completed an activity modeled after the book “Perfect Square.”  They had to turn a square piece of paper into a new creation.  Kindergarten has been working on patterns and read “Pattern Fish.”

INVENTING:
3rd and 4th grade are working on a long term project called the Invent it Challenge.  The focus is sport related inventions.  It can make a sport safer, accessible, fun, etc...  We just started creating “crude” prototypes using upcycle materials in STEAM or small items from home.  Website link - Invent It Challenge

SCIENCE:
The students did science with SNOW as our theme in January.  Now, we are waiting for spring to do many outside activities using the new outdoor classroom and to prepare for the spring/summer growing season.  I will be partnering with the high school agriculture class as well to start plants.  The students will be participating in the Seedlings for Schools as well as a project with LEAF and saplings.  So, there is more to come as spring approaches!
